100 Years of Rotary on Prince Edward Island
The Rotary Club of Charlottetown was admitted into Rotary International membership on
October 1, 1917, and received its charter on November 8 of that year. Since that time, the Club
has been active in promoting the concept of Rotary throughout the Province, sponsoring four of
the other five clubs currently on the Island: Summerside (1943), Hillsborough (1979), Montague
!985) and Charlottetown Royalty (1987). The Rotary Club of Stratford is the other Island club.
Plans are under way for the Rotary Club of Charlottetown to give leadership in celebrating 100
years of Rotary in the Province with the co-operation of the other Island clubs.
Several ideas are being considered for the celebrations including the identification of both an
Island-wide and an international project.
A planning committee co-chaired by Robert (Bob) Moffatt and Lorne Moase has been struck by
the Charlottetown Club’s Board and work is already under way on the identification of
descendants of the Club’s 21 charter members who, it is anticipated, will be recognized in some
appropriate way.
Updates on plans being developed will be provided by the planning committee from time to time
